Southdown Sheep
Southdown sheep are the oldest purebred sheep in the world. They originated in the "Downs" of England and are primarily raised for meat, with a high quality carcass and efficient feed conversion. Their meat is particularly tender and flavorful. They are sought after for their ease of finishing on grass with minimal grain supplement. Their fiber is short, springy, and resistant to felting making it well suited to socks and other durable applications. Southdowns are a docile breed, easy to manage and moderate in size.
Our breeding program focuses on maintaining the exceptional meat qualities of the Southdown and improving the quality of fiber produced. Due to the low value of wool, many Southdown breeders do not utilize or select for wool quality. Our farm's goal is to utilize as much of the animal as possible and as such we breed for a more well rounded animal.
We strive to produce healthy, hardy animals who require minimal foot care and parasite treatment. Our goal is that through quality management practices and careful genetic selection we will not need to use anthelmintic to treat for parasites.
