Shetland sheep are one of the smallest breeds of sheep. Classified as a primitive breed, they have naturally short tails that do not require docking. They originate from sheep brought to the Shetland Islands of Scotland by Vikings over one thousand years ago. Their fiber is of varying length with low lanolin for easy handling. They come in eleven basic colors with thirty recognized patterns and markings. One sheep typically produces 2-6 lbs of usable fleece each year ranging from 2-4 inches in length. Some individuals will shed their fleece in the spring, called rooing.
We focus our breeding program on maintaining the unique character of the shetlands with specific focus on fleece quality, color, and hardiness All our animals are purchased from tested herds (CAE/CL/Johnes negative) and have been tested on our farm. We strive to produce healthy, hardy animals who require minimal foot care and parasite treatment. Our goal is that through quality management practices and careful genetic selection we will not need to use anthelmintic to treat for parasites.
